Auburn University senior Alyssa Quinones-Mixon secured a silver medal in the women’s pole vault at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday. The event took place at the Fasken Indoor Track on the Texas A&M campus in Bryan-College Station, Texas.
Quinones-Mixon, who is from San Antonio, cleared 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5.25 inches) on her second attempt. This was her best performance of the season and marked her highest finish at an SEC meet. Her achievement is also notable as it represents Auburn’s top result in the women’s pole vault since Jessie Johnson won medals in 2015 and 2016.
Sophomore Israel Okon advanced to the finals of the men’s 200-meter race after recording a time of 20.71 seconds during preliminaries, making him the eighth fastest qualifier. Okon previously earned a silver medal in the SEC for the 60-meter event last year. The final for the men’s 200 meters is scheduled for Saturday at 5:40 p.m. Central Time.
In other results, sophomore Asande Mthembu finished eighth in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.75 meters (25 feet, 4.75 inches) on his last attempt, moving up from ninth place to score points for Auburn. Mthembu is Auburn’s first indoor SEC scorer in this event since Mark Rubalcaba in 2016.
The women’s distance medley relay team—composed of Arianna Roy, Zuriel Reed, Cady McPhail, and Hallie Porterfield—finished tenth with a time of 11:16.21. This result stands as the second fastest time ever recorded by Auburn in this event and was less than three seconds away from breaking a school record set in 1995.
Thursday marked the start of the three-day championship meet with a limited schedule that included four women’s events and three men’s events alongside preliminary heats for some races.
Competition will continue Friday starting at 11 a.m. Central Time with field events such as the women’s weight throw and track events beginning at 4 p.m., including the women’s mile.
