No. 6 Auburn’s baseball team lost a close game to No. 7 Texas A&M, 4-3, on May 3 at Blue Bell Park. Auburn scored two runs in the ninth inning and loaded the bases with one out but could not complete the comeback.
The outcome matters as it capped a competitive series between two top-ranked teams, with Auburn securing its fifth straight Southeastern Conference series win despite Sunday’s loss.
Auburn trailed by three runs going into the final inning. Bub Terrell’s RBI single brought them within one run and loaded the bases, but Texas A&M closer Clayton Freshcorn induced a double play to end the game. “I was pleased with our pitchers the entire series,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “To hold this offense, arguably thinking it’s the best patience and power in the entire country to four runs today, they got the timely hit. We didn’t control the at-bats well. I’ll give their starting pitcher a lot of credit. Our guys just buckled down late and our at-bats were better in the last couple frames and scared them to death.”
Chris Hacopian’s three-run home run for Texas A&M proved decisive in extending their lead during a close sixth inning contest. “That timely hit was big today,” Thompson added. “Hacopians’ three-run homer was a big one because Petro was pretty good today. He threw well and gave us a chance… The second half of this series, the runs became harder to get… We buckled down and finished as strong as we could.”
Auburn players contributed late-inning hits that sparked hope for victory but ultimately fell short due to defensive plays by Texas A&M.
Reflecting on his team’s performance, Rembert said: “We did what we needed to do… Going into the ninth inning we were full of confidence… I’m really looking forward to the competition.” Despite Sunday’s defeat, Auburn achieved its first five-series SEC winning streak since 2023.
Looking ahead, Thompson emphasized consistency: “The standard and effort has to be the same every day… This is the best training in the world where it feels like we’re playing five super regionals in a row.” Auburn will continue its road trip with upcoming games against UAB and Mississippi State.
