Auburn University’s men’s golf team defeated South Carolina in the quarterfinals but was eliminated by Ole Miss in the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference Championship on April 25 at Sea Island Golf Club.
The outcome highlights Auburn’s strong performance throughout the tournament and their continued pursuit of a national championship. The team’s head coach, Nick Clinard, said, “I’m proud of our guys; I thought they played pretty good golf, Ole Miss just played better, especially when it came to the short game. We’re proud of what we accomplished this week, particularly in stroke play, but there is more golf left to be played this season. We’ve still got a shot at a national championship, and that’s our goal.”
In the quarterfinals against South Carolina, Auburn secured a 3-1-1 victory. Junior Cayden Pope led his match from start to finish and won 4&3 over Brock Blais after making several early birdies. Josiah Gilbert also maintained control throughout his match for a 3&2 win against Talan Harrison. Freshman Logan Reilly clinched his match with a birdie on the first playoff hole after being taken to extra holes by Marek Fleming.
Jackson Koivun tied with Zach Adams as both players shot matching scores before their match ended when Auburn had already secured enough points for victory.
In the semifinal round versus Ole Miss, Auburn fell short by one point with a final score of 3-2. Notable performances included Reilly’s comeback win over Daniel Tolf and Jake Albert’s convincing victory against Cohen Trolio after losing earlier in the day.
Despite not advancing to the finals at this year’s SEC Championship, Coach Clinard emphasized that Auburn remains focused on upcoming opportunities: “We’ve still got a shot at a national championship, and that’s our goal.”
