Auburn University’s softball team lost to the University of Arkansas, 4-1, in the final game of their series on April 6 at Bogle Park. Auburn took an early lead but could not hold off three solo home runs by Arkansas, who completed a sweep of the series.
The outcome is significant as it marks Auburn’s tenth loss in Southeastern Conference play this season and highlights challenges for the team as they seek to regain momentum.
Co-head coach Chris Malveaux said, “We came out and fought. I liked the way we settled in the circle and defensively to put ourselves in position to win. We took a step forward in the rhythm of our at-bats. We barreled a lot of balls and had nothing to show for it. They barreled balls and got everything. That’s the difference in the game.” Malveaux added, “The game is reminding us that it’s a humbling process and that getting back on track takes time. I feel like we’re just a step away. Success is around the corner if we continue to push through.”
Junior Alyssa Hastings was responsible for both Auburn hits during Monday’s contest, while sophomore Ella Harrison started as pitcher for three innings with two strikeouts but allowed three runs. Redshirt freshman Abby Herndon pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing only one hit.
Arkansas responded quickly after Auburn scored first with two solo home runs in the second inning and another solo shot leading off the fourth inning before manufacturing their fourth run later that frame.
Looking ahead, Auburn will host No. 1 Alabama from April 10-12 at Jane B. Moore Field during Alumni Weekend activities including pregame honors for former players on Sunday.
