Auburn softball lost the first game of its series against Missouri, 3-0, on Mar. 27 at Jane B. Moore Field. Despite a strong pitching performance from sophomore Ella Harrison, Auburn struggled offensively and could not generate enough runs to support their pitcher.
The loss matters for Auburn as it sets the tone for the rest of the series and highlights challenges with offensive production during conference play.
Harrison struck out nine batters, allowed no walks, and gave up just six hits over her outing. Co-head coach Chris Malveaux said after the game, “That’s a tough-luck game for Ella (Harrison). She shouldn’t have been in that position. There were opportunities we could have created to get run support for her. It’s a tough ask in conference play to go shut somebody out.”
Offensively, Auburn was limited to four hits throughout the game. Sophomore Kylie Shaw and freshman Haven Roebuck each hit doubles while junior Ma’Nia Womack and freshman Ava Ratliff added singles. Malveaux commented on Auburn’s approach at the plate: “(Cierra Harrison) did a good job working ahead, but to be honest, we didn’t compete,” he said. “For whatever reason, we locked up despite knowing what was coming. We got defensive. We looked to put it into play instead of looking to score runs. That’s the story of the game.
“Kudos to her for continuing to pound the zone and pitch her game,” Malveaux continued about Missouri’s pitcher Cierra Harrison. “It’s a shame that we didn’t put any pressure on her. We weren’t a threat. I don’t understand how we came out like that tonight.”
Missouri scored first after an RBI single following a leadoff double in the second inning; Madison Uptegrove extended their lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning and added another RBI with a triple in the sixth.
Looking ahead, Malveaux said: “The series is still at hand,” adding that changes are needed before Saturday’s matchup: “We have to change something… It’s going to be a fight, and we’ve got to come back ready to go.” Game two will take place Saturday at 2 p.m., airing on SEC Network+, with local radio coverage available.
