Auburn track and field announced on Apr. 30 that it will divide its squad between two meets this weekend, with athletes competing at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial in Athens, Georgia, and the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 1-2.
The split competition is intended to give Auburn athletes opportunities to qualify for postseason events as they approach the end of the regular season. The team aims to build on recent successes ahead of hosting the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships later in May.
According to Auburn’s announcement, twenty throwers and distance runners will compete at the University of Georgia’s Spec Town Track in Athens. Meanwhile, twenty-one sprinters are set to race at North Florida’s campus in Jacksonville. The schedule includes Friday evening mile races in Athens beginning at 8:30 p.m. Central Time (CT), with Saturday’s events starting at 11:00 a.m. CT for field competitions and continuing through midday with relays and other races. In Jacksonville, Friday’s action starts with men’s hammer throw and pole vault at 2:00 p.m. CT followed by running events later that afternoon; Saturday features both field and running events throughout the day.
The Tigers enter these meets following a strong showing at their home Tiger Track Classic where several school records were broken or matched. Freshman Sophia Mazzoni broke her own freshman javelin record twice during last week’s meet, ultimately achieving a mark of 54.50 meters—her fourth time setting or tying this record in as many collegiate competitions this season.
Other notable performances included senior Megan Hague winning gold in women’s shot put with an effort of 18.10 meters—the second-best mark ever recorded by an Auburn athlete—and senior Matthew Rueff taking first place in men’s shot put with his eighth career outdoor win.
This weekend serves as Auburn’s final opportunity for athletes to secure qualifying marks before postseason play begins with the SEC Outdoor Championships scheduled from May 14–16.
