Auburn University’s women’s golf team is tied for fifth place after the opening round of the NCAA Simpsonville Regional at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, on May 11. The Tigers posted a team score of 2-under 286 and trail co-leaders Houston and Ole Miss by four strokes.
The performance positions Auburn within reach of advancing to the next stage, as only the top five teams from each regional site will qualify for the NCAA Championship later this month.
Head coach Melissa Luellen said, “Today had its ups and downs, but we finished on a high note. 5-under on the final five holes showed the fight, composure and belief this team has. We’ll make a couple adjustments off the tee tomorrow so we can focus on creating birdie opportunities instead of scrambling for pars. Tomorrow is moving day, and we’re excited for it.”
Sophomore Molly Brown Davidson and junior Anna Davis led Auburn with rounds of 2-under 70. Davidson recovered from an early bogey with three birdies before making back-to-back birdies late in her round. Davis recorded her ninth under-par round this season with five birdies overall; both players are tied for twelfth individually.
Freshman Charlotte Cantonis overcame challenges during her back nine to finish strong with three consecutive birdies, posting a score of 1-under 71 and tying for eighteenth place individually. Katie Cranston and Carys Worby each carded a 3-over-par 75 to complete Auburn’s scoring in round one.
The second round will begin Tuesday at 7 a.m. Central Time off the tenth tee. Live streaming video coverage is available via subscription at BabyGrandeGolf.com; live scoring updates can be found at scoreboard.clippd.com.
The NCAA Championship will take place May 22-27 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
