No. 5 Auburn women’s golf team finished the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in third place among 17 teams at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Tigers posted a score of 10-over-par 294.

Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen commented on the team’s performance: “Gusty winds and a tough golf course can lead to high scores. As a team, we had too many big numbers, which are hard to overcome on this challenging course. I was proud of the way all five kept their chins up and kept fighting. We met after the round and determined the big numbers came from some indecision, which can be cleaned up tomorrow. Despite a tough day, we left the course in good spirits and excited to play tomorrow.”

The Tigers recorded 13 birdies during Monday’s round, ranking second in birdies among all teams competing. Auburn trails tournament leader No. 9 Texas by 15 strokes and is seven shots behind second-place Florida State. The team holds a one-stroke advantage over two teams tied for fourth place.

Junior Anna Davis led Auburn with a score of 1-over-par 72, starting her round on hole No. 10 and making back-to-back birdies on holes three and four before finishing with another birdie after a double bogey on six. She is tied for 15th individually.

Freshman Charlotte Cantonis followed with a steady performance, carding a 2-over-par 73 with 16 pars to tie for 19th place individually.

Molly Brown Davidson contributed with a score of three-over-par (74), tying for 27th place, while Katie Cranston added a four-over-par (75) to tie for 38th.

Carys Worby rounded out Auburn’s lineup with an opening-round score of nine-over-par (80), placing her tied for 76th.

The second round will begin at 9:20 a.m. CT Tuesday. Live television coverage will be broadcast on Golf Channel from 1:30-4:30 p.m. CT, while live scoring can be found at scoreboard.clippd.com.
