Auburn University’s women’s tennis team won its first Southeastern Conference tournament championship on April 19, defeating Louisiana State University in a closely contested final at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The third-ranked Auburn Tigers edged out fifteenth-ranked LSU with a 4-3 victory, clinched by freshman Eva Ionescu’s three-set win at the No. 6 singles position.
The win marks a historic achievement for Auburn, which had never before claimed the SEC tournament title. Head coach Jordan Szabo said after the match, “Amazing for the team. That was such a nail-biter and no team down the stretch deserved to lose. We maybe could have won the match about an hour earlier, but that’s the way it goes when all the best teams are playing each other. For Eva (Ionescu) to be in that position to come through, you know, these are memories she’ll have for the rest of her life.”
Auburn set an early tone by securing the doubles point with strong performances from Ekaterina Khairutdinova and Ashton Bowers at No. 3 doubles and Angella Okutoyi and Merna Refaat at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, both teams exchanged victories until Okutoyi tied up the overall score with a comeback win at No. 3 singles before Ionescu sealed Auburn’s victory.
Szabo praised his players’ resilience throughout tense moments: “Getting off the court after winning a quick doubles point was big… Amazing performance from Angie (Okutoyi) to fight back in that first set after being down 0-4 and DJ (Bennett), who comfortably beat one of the best players in college tennis.” He added later, “Just an amazing tournament… We’re going to keep trying to shoot for the stars and try to get back here many more times, but for now we’re going to enjoy it and get a little bit of rest.”
With this result, Auburn improved its season record to 32-3 and extended its winning streak to six matches heading into NCAA postseason play. The Tigers will learn their seeding during selection announcements scheduled for April 27.
