Job Summary

Under direction monitors employee performance and interprets guidelines and directives, trains and orients staff on procedures and proper use of equipment, operates greens mower with attachments to cut and maintain golf green; prunes, waters and fertilizes plants and shrubbery, collects and disposes garbage; inspects tools and equipment to ensure operability, performs minor services and repairs, obtains quotes on services and repairs needed; ensures equipment is cleaned and stored properly and performs additional duties in support of the department as needed or upon request.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required, assigned and expected aside from those set forth below to address operational needs and changing operational practices.

  • Interprets orders and directives to crew members.
  • Ensures that safety regulations are followed.
  • Resolves minor work related problems.
  • Trains and orients new staff on procedures and use of equipment.
  • Monitors employee performance.
  • Advises and informs supervisor regarding performance and disciplinary actions.
  • Cuts grass on golf green using greens mower with attachments and empties excess grass in disposal site.
  • Cuts and maintains fairways and grounds surrounding pro shop.
  • Cuts low hanging limbs from trees along course.
  • Uses string trimmer to edge sidewalks and areas not easily accessible by mowers.
  • Attaches blower to tractor to gather leaves, straw or other debris.
  • Uses rakes to gather pine straw and other debris; uses fork to load for disposal.
  • Assists crew in grading, leveling and smoothing sand traps.
  • Locates and repairs problems with irrigation system.
  • Maintains plants and shrubbery by pruning, watering and fertilizing.
  • Instructs crew to collect garbage or other debris along course.
  • Uses tee box mower to cut and maintain golf tees.
  • Operates tractor with attachments to cut larger areas around facility.
  • Operates backhoe to lift heavy debris and sand.
  • Inspects golf green and make repairs to include laying sod as needed.
  • Inspects fairways to ensure grass clippings are collected and properly disposed.
  • Operates aerifier to maintain golf green.
  • Using Fairway mower grooms and maintains fairways.
  • Operates verti-cutter to thin golf green as needed.
  • Distributes fertilizer and grass seeds on course; applies pesticides when needed.
  • Visually inspects tools and equipment to ensure operability.
  • Ensures crew checks oil and fluids to include oil, water and hydraulic fluids; adds additional fluid as needed.
  • Inspects blades and replaces broken equipment. Inspects brakes and lights to insure proper operation.
  • Instructs crew to perform minor repairs to equipment to include replacing minor parts, tires and hydraulic lines.
  • Obtains quotes on services or repairs needed.
  • Informs mechanic on repairs needed or major equipment malfunctions.
  • Directs crew to refuel vehicle and gas powered equipment as needed.
  • Ensures that tools and equipment are cleaned regularly and are free of grease, dirt or debris before storing.
  • Using pressure washer, brush and cleaning solution, clean vehicle of mud, dirt or debris.
  • Cleans workshop to include sweeping, collecting garbage and cleaning bathrooms.
  • Uses two-way radio to communicate with supervisor or work crews on work related issues.
  • Subscribes to and reviews professional publications.
  • Performs or instructs crew in performing minor building maintenance tasks to include painting, clean windows and replacing lights.

Qualifications

Education & Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be:

Education/Training
High School Diploma; training in agronomy or closely related area

Experience
10 years experience in a progressively responsible leadership roll at a Golf Course or other specialized turf management

Licenses or Certifications Required
Ornamental and Turf Pest Control Commercial Applicator Permit (required within one year of hire)

The following generally describes the knowledge and abilities required in order to successfully perform the assigned duties of the position:

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of greens maintenance including fertilization, weed control, aerating, mowing and irrigation.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in greens maintenance.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers and pesticides used in greens maintenance.
  • Knowledge of policies, rules and regulations of the City of Phenix City.

Ability to:

  • Read and comprehend operator manuals, directives, gauges and indicators.
  • Efficiently prepare reports, work orders and similar non-complex documents.
  • Verbally communicate to issue instructions and converse with employees, patrons, vendors or suppliers.
  • Use math skills to correctly calibrate chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Use supervisory skills in delegation, communication, motivation and leadership.
  • Safely and efficiently operate backhoe to lift and maneuver heavy debris.
  • Operate tractor with attachments to cut and maintain facility grounds.
  • Operate specialized greens grooming tools to include aerifiers and verti cutters.
  • Exercise judgment particularly in tasks involving safety of self and others or efficiency of operations.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner
