In the 2023-24 school year, 87.2% of Black or African American students in Russell County schools met Alabama’s college readiness criteria, according to the Alabama Department of Education.

Of the 671 students assessed for college readiness in the county, 341 were Black or African American and met college readiness standards—a 22.7% increase from the previous year.

Countywide, Central High School had the highest percentage of Black or African American students ready for college.

A total of 633 students graduated from Russell County schools in the 2023-24 school year.

Alabama’s educational system was rated as one of the worst in the U.S., according to a 2023 study from Scholaroo. The state was ranked 46th based on factors such as school quality, student success, and teacher-to-student ratio.
