The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is starting a new initiative called the “9pm Routine” to encourage residents to improve home security habits. Beginning September 1, 2023, residents who use the Lee County Sheriff’s Office AL app can receive nightly reminders at 9 p.m. Central Time.

The push notifications will remind users to remove valuables and firearms from vehicles, lock doors, and ensure that home alarms and exterior lights are on. The campaign aims to reduce crimes of opportunity such as theft from vehicles during nighttime hours.

According to Jay Jones, Lee County Sheriff: “One of our most commonly occurring crimes involves theft of items from vehicles at night. This program is designed to remove the opportunity for those thefts to occur.”

The app is available for free download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. Users can enable the “9pm Routine” notifications in three steps within the app.

The original 9pm Routine campaign was started by the Pasco County Florida Sheriff’s Office in 2016 and has since been adopted by agencies nationwide as a method to help prevent crime across communities.
