Tuskegee men's basketball (5-0, 0-0 SIAC) remained unbeaten with wins over Fayetteville State and Shaw over the weekend as part of the HBCU All Star Challenge, held inside Forbes Arena.
Tuskegee 43, Fayetteville State 40
The Golden Tigers found themselves in a defensive battle on Friday, holding Fayetteville State to just 12 made field goals in the game for shooting splits of 20.7 (12-for-58) percent from the field and 17.4 (4-for-23) from three-point range.
Tuskegee jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to start the game, before extending their lead to double digits for the first time on a three from Gregg Boyd (Seat Pleasant, Md.) to go up 18-8 with just over four minutes to play.
The Broncos closed the gap in the final few minutes of the half however and reduced the deficit to 20-16 heading into the locker rooms for halftime.
The game remained tight throughout the second half, with Fayetteville State taking a one-point lead early in the half, before a response from Tuskegee regained the lead but neither team earned a significant advantage until a jumper from the Broncos put them up. 39-34 with 4:27 to play.
Deveraux Davis (Minneapolis, Minn.) sank a three to pull within two moments later, followed by another jumper from Boyd to tie the game at 39-39 with just under a minute and a half remaining. Meanwhile, Mason Green (Ellenwood, Ga.) gave the Golden Tigers their final lead of the game with a layup with 41 seconds left, and Tuskegee secured the win with a pair of free throws.
Martez Jones (Tuskegee, Ala.) led the way for the Golden Tigers with eight points, eight rebounds and three blocks, followed by Steve Dulley (Kansas City, Mo.) and Davis who had seven points and five rebounds each in the win.
Tuskegee 65, Shaw 47
Jones was also one on the leaders in the game on Saturday against Shaw, scoring nine points and grabbing a season-high ten rebounds, while Boyd and D'Anthony Pennington (Kansas City, Mo.) scored in double figures with 12 and ten points respectively.
The Golden Tigers held Shaw to under 25 points in both halves, taking a lead in the first half and went into the half up 31-24, before the 65-47 win. Shaw finished the game with shooting splits of 26.4 (14-for-53) percent from the field, (4-for-17) percent from three, and 50 (15-for-30) percent from the free throw line.
Meanwhile, Tuskegee shot 38.3 (23-for-60) percent from the floor, 26.1 (6-for-23) percent from deep, and 65 (13-for-20) percent from the free throw line in the win.
