With the NCAA Men's Basketball South Region Tournament approaching, Tuskegee is preparing for a tough battle against West Alabama.
Coach Benjy Taylor's team won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division title, but were upset in the first round of the tournament by Kentucky State. Despite that, the Golden Tigers were awarded the No. 7 seed and will take on the Tigers, who were awarded the No. 2 seed after winning the Gulf South Conference Tournament, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Rick Case Arena in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Tuskegee enters the tournament 20-8 overall and had won four in a row before falling to the Thorobreds.
Meanwhile, West Alabama, ranked 17th in the latest NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, is 26-5 and has won five in a row, including its 67-65 win over West Georgia to win the GSC title.
The Tigers are led by Nick Woodruff, who has claimed back-to-back GSC Coach of the Year honors.West Alabama has also been led by Shardarrion Allen, Justin Allison, Terry Durham and Kuran Garner. Allen, a first-team All-GSC pick, averages 13.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and has 42 steals.
Allison, named the Most Outstanding Player of the GSC Tournament, averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds in leading the Tigers to the title. He had 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range in a first round win over Union and had 17 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and three assists in the semifinals against Lee. Allison had 18 points in the championship game against West Georgia. During the season, Allison averaged 13.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and had 95 assists.
Durham averages 12.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and has 31 steals.
Garner was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 14.7 points and 5.3 rebounds. During the season, Garner averaged 11.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and has 56 assists and 33 steals.
Thaddeus Williams was also a big contributor, averaging 9.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and had 62 assists.
West Alabama is 3-2 all-time against Tuskegee.
