Tuskegee University was represented at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta for “Booker T. Washington Day,” an event recognizing the university’s founding principal. The occasion was organized through a resolution sponsored by Georgia State Senator Donzella James and brought together descendants of Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee leaders, alumni, and supporters.
Among those representing Tuskegee University were Student Ambassador Mackenzie Thompson, Dr. Rolundus R. Rice (Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for Student Affairs), Trustee Natalie D. Knight, and Trustee Carla Whitlock.
Dr. Rice stated: “We are honored to join with descendants of Booker T. Washington to honor our founding principal. Not just for lifting as he climbed but also lifting the veil of ignorance through his vision to create Tuskegee Institute, empowering Black people with the transformational power of education.”
During the event, Trustee Whitlock met De’Marrion Pearman, a student visiting with his 4-H group who plans to enroll at Tuskegee in the fall to study cybersecurity after she noticed him recognize her Tuskegee sweater.
Reflecting on their meeting, Whitlock said: “What struck me was how naturally the past and present converge. We continue to make history. I was reminded of that today in a tangible way.”
The event highlighted both the legacy of Booker T. Washington and Tuskegee University’s ongoing role in shaping future generations.
