Tuskegee University President Dr. Mark A. Brown reflected on the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men’s Basketball Championship game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College in a statement released March 8.
The matchup brought together two historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with strong athletic traditions, highlighting the significance of their meeting in the championship game.
Brown said, “Last night’s SIAC Men’s Basketball Championship between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College was a clash worthy of history. Two storied HBCUs, two proud traditions—meeting not as rivals alone, but as titans.” He added that although Tuskegee did not win the trophy, the team competed with respect and determination: “We leave without the trophy, but with our heads held high, having fought the good fight.”
Brown also recognized Morehouse College President David A. Thomas Bowman for his leadership and congratulated him on his recent investiture. He praised Tuskegee’s Golden Tigers for achieving the best overall record in the SIAC this season and highlighted individual honors: “Kevin Draper, SIAC Player of the Year. Coach Benjy Taylor, SIAC Coach of the Year. Achievements that speak volumes about the character and commitment of this program.”
He credited fans for their support during the championship run: “The biggest winners were the fans. Our sixth man on the court—Golden Tiger alumni, parents, students, and friends—showed up in record numbers and cheered until the final buzzer. That is HBCU pride at its finest.” Brown concluded by referencing historical figures Benjamin Mays and Booker T. Washington to emphasize perseverance and excellence.
The statement underscores both schools’ commitment to sportsmanship and tradition as they look ahead to future competitions.
